ADHD Superpowers:  Part 1: Life of the party line up

Most people with ADHD are quick to mention the less than ideal side of their condition like scattered thoughts and intense self-doubt.  However, many strengths; aka, our secret weapons, lie under the surface of this sometimes challenging divergence.  Once we realize the ones we personally resonate with, we can leverage them toward success. Today let’s cover the ADHD strengths that help us thoroughly enjoy our world and others.

  • The invigorating five that keep things alive

  • Talent for Fun- Since the ADHD nervous system is based on interest rather than cause and effect, it means whatever the ADHD mind zeroes in on is going to be thoroughly enjoyed.  Therefore, those with ADHD are likely to have lots of fun in the moment, no matter the activity.

  • Energy- Once the ADHD mind is zeroed in on and enjoying an activity, this naturally spurs the motivation, energy and optimism to follow through with whatever the activity involves. Therefore, whatever the ADHD mind chooses to do, they’re gifted at finding the energy they need to do it.

  • Exploration- The fact that the nervous system is based on interest and also novelty rather than effects and consequences allows the person to take new and thrilling risks that often lead to fresh discoveries, self-knowledge, and endurance.

  • Sense of humor - Having so many ideas and different ways of looking at one situation allows for a good sense of humor, which helps regulate uncomfortable emotions both for one’s selt and for others. This can be a powerful tool for making meaningful emotional connections with others.

  • Acceptance and compassion: Learning differently one’s self builds understanding for others’ varied differences from the norm.  It also develops acceptance and support, like rooting for the underdogs and strongly inspiring others at the exact time and in the exact way the inspiration is needed.

To wrap up, even though ADHD is not our culture’s typical way of functioning, it's also interwoven with several powerful strengths you can leverage to your advantage.  Hopefully, after reading above, you’re more confident in your ability to find joy and connection with others at any time and any place.  Stay tuned for next time on ADHD’s  correlational superpowers.
